ABOUT THE FARM:

Deep Rooted is a certified organic produce farm in Westby, Wisconsin that specializes in greenhouse and hoop house production with a focus on tomato production. The farm supplies high quality produce to the greater La Crosse area. The small, diversified farm is operating in four 34 x96’’ greenhouses, one high tunnel, one caterpillar tunnel, and a half acre of field production. We are currently hiring a garden center sales and customer services & seasonal farm crew members for our 2023 season.

SEASONAL / PART-TIME GARDEN CENTER SALES & CUSTOMER SERVICE

This position will start in April and will run through mid / end of June. If interested in staying on, additional work opportunities can run through November. The qualified applicant must have excellent communication skills, a positive attitude and be able to maintain a professional appearance. Previous horticulture / garden experience is preferred but willing to train the right applicant.
 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Effectively and efficiently carry out day to day sales operations of the farm. 9 am -6 pm Wednesday, Friday and Saturdays (May - mid/end of June).

• Work directly with the farm owner, farm leads, and other crew members

• Plant care and watering

•  Maintaining the quality and appearance of plants and s ales space

• Assisting customers and answering any questions they may have

• Handling checkout responsibilities, including processing credit cards

• Provide excellent customer service to ensure a positive shopping experience

• Complete daily job lists

• Escorting customers and their purchases including soil and heavy planters and baskets to their cars and thanking them for their business

• Must be able to lift heavy objects and/or have no other physical limitations

SEASONAL CREW MEMBER POSITION

We are now hiring part-time crew members (2) for the 204 growing season (must be able to work Mondays and Thursdays). Farm crew members are the foundation of Deep Rooted and each employee will be a key member of the team. Responsibilities will include harvesting, washing, packing, weeding, trellising, pruning, and more. Crew members will gain experience of the production cycle on the farm and take part in group responsibilities and individual tasks. We strive to be a positive workplace, maintain a culture of cooperation and respect and foster professional development through challenging work. We will work closely with you to train you in our production, harvest and post-harvest practices. Once trained you will be expected to complete tasks independently, efficiently and with attention to detail in order to maintain our quality standards.  

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Effectively and efficiently carry out day to day operations of the farm

• Work directly with the farm owner, farm leads, and other crew members 

• Contribute to all aspects of the farm including: greenhouse work, harvesting, weeding, trellising, washing, and packing and end of season clean up.

QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS:

• Preferred 1 season of experience on another production farm or other applicable work experience

• Ability to maintain a clean and safe work environment 

• Interest in local, sustainable agriculture and farming practices 

• Must be a good listener and take direction well 

• Ability to work long hours in a fast-paced environment

• Ability to work independently while staying motivated

• Ability to work well on a team

• Ability to lift 50 pounds and perform repetitive physical tasks in all types of weather conditions. (heat, rain, snow, etc.)

• Must be organized and show attention to detail

• Expected to arrive at work on time with a good attitude 

• Must be self-motivated and interested in learning new farming methods

• Quality, speed, and efficiency are important 

• Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation

JOB TERMS:

Start date: April 2024

End date: Mid- November

Must be able to work Mondays and Thursdays and up to 2 other days.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:

Starting Pay:  Commensurate with experience
